Probing the grey areas, examining the interspaces, blurring the boundaries. Alexander Vantournhout has made a speciality of escaping from fixed categories. With his background in two worlds that he associates as he sees fit – the world of Circassia and contemporary dance –, he always extracts more from them than the sum of these two parts. In a boxing ring, it’s the footwork that fascinates him. And so, he’s decided to shine a spotlight on what normally escapes attention: here the focus is on the lower body. Nimble is set to be Not Standing’s biggest creation: a large stage where nine dancers in constant movement spread out, shift between the individual and the collective, and directly give shape to the soundtrack. From electro loops to polyrhythms, movement and music propel each other and transform the stage into a collective physical rhythm.
