Can the space of the theatre be re-enchanted? With the carnivalesque Parterre, Volmir Cordeiro seeks to invoke his earliest memories of the theatre: a democratic space for intellectual and emotional blossoming. For ten years now, the Brazilian choreographer has been presenting marginalized bodies and movements, in order to transform theatres into political arenas of resistance. Parterre once again brings these subversive figures into a living salon featuring grimaces, absurd gestures and extravagant costumes. Accompanied by thundering music, the performers furiously gyrate their hips and thrust their knees, exalting their lower bodies, which are frequently seen as vulgar. Their enthusiasm, spreading into the audience, creates a shared basis for bringing together spectators and stage.
