PHAT KAT - 30 YEARS DETROIT HIPHOP PHAT KAT is one of Detroit's most respected MCs, a key figure in the city's underground hip-hop scene for more than three decades. As SOUNDS celebrates its 40th anniversary, Welcome To Belgium and Da Bluefunk District join forces to welcome one of the artists who has embodied more than 30 years of Detroit hip-hop. This special concert celebrates the legacy of 1st Down, the legendary duo formed by Phat Kat and producer Jon Doe, later known worldwide as J Dilla. Recorded in the mid-1990s for Payday Records, these tracks captured the birth of a sound that would forever influence hip-hop production: stripped-back drums, soulful samples, deep funk grooves and uncompromising lyricism. Recently released in its complete original form, 1st Down finally shines a light on this essential chapter of Detroit music history, presenting the recordings exactly as they were originally intended. If you know the Detroit sound, you already know what to expect. This isn't a beat night, but it might just feel like one. The grooves, the drums, the swing and that unmistakable Detroit feel are everywhere.
