Price TBCAs a part of the Collective Session with experimental filmmaker Deborah Stratman, running from 21.09 until 25.09, yourschouwburg is happy to host our SoundImageCulture (SIC) neighbours for a day of hands-on and shared silver screen shenanigans. masterclass The Stumble as a Map — Starting from the premise that form conveys belief, and that each form organizes the conditions under which it’s trusted, this masterclass asks how we might strategically use that form, as well as how we might erode rather than reproduce its authority. We will unpack this general theme through discussions of rhythm, entrainment, thresholds and containers, and by studying spaces as pieces of time. The "stumble" is introduced as a partner of thinking and making: an unexpected encounter, a disruption, or a moment that takes us somewhere we did not initially intend to go. Through discussion, exercises and examples from Stratman's own practice, the masterclass will invite participants to experiment with these ideas in relation to their own work. The workshop is open to different approaches and practices, and no specific technical preparation is required. about Deborah Stratman is a Chicago-based filmmaker who has been active since the 1990s. A multidisciplinary artist, she has directed nearly forty works that question social codes using unconventional cinematic devices. She reflects transversally on history, mythology, science, technology, and security and surveillance mechanisms. Between documentary essay and experimental cinema, Stratman’s films present dense research and function through free association. The result is poetic and free-flowing works that are not without a systematic political relationship to reality. Deborah Stratman’s work has been presented internationally at prestigious venues such as the Whitney Biennial, MOMA, and the Centre Georges-Pompidou. Her films have also been widely screened at most major international festivals. She is currently an associate professor at the School of Art & Art History at the University of Illinois in Chicago. https://www.instagram.com/deltaromoeosierra/ http://www.pythagorasfilm.com/ SoundImageCulture (SIC) is a Brussels-based creative laboratory for filmmakers, artists, and anthropologists developing film projects. Over a year-long program, participants receive collective feedback, individual mentorship, and masterclasses in a supportive environment. Blurring boundaries between documentary, fiction, and essay, SIC fosters poetic, sensorial storytelling that challenges conventions and redefines how cinema thinks, feels, and engages. https://soundimageculture.org/
