Tatiana Frolova continues to create poignant theatre of dissent, which is both understated and deeply political. In 2024 Nous ne sommes plus… told the story of an exile forced by the war in Ukraine. Russian director Tatiana Frolova and KnAM Théâtre, now hosted in Lyon by the Théâtre des Célestins, are opening a new chapter in their new life. How are they doing? ‘We’re fine’ – but not quite. On stage, six silhouettes waver and support each other. The ordeal is making itself felt in the bodies of these uprooted people: learning a new language, being far from home, living in unfamiliar surroundings. So, caring for a plant or holding a potato to talk about Russian dishes are small rituals that help to ward off the feeling of loss. Archival photos and films support the efforts made to recall and document with precision the violence of Putin’s regime. And yet it is without giving in to despair that Tatiana Frolova collects manifestations of humanity, tiny details that mark a refusal to give up.
