John McAllister - 'some ecstasies enthrall', at Almine Rech. Fifth solo exhibition of the American painter John McAllister with Almine Rech Brussels, opening on 19 November from 6 to 9 pm. The landscape paintings are made from memory and imagination, built through colour and layered brushwork with patterned trompe l'oeil borders as entry points. The show explores being struck by a landscape and treats its views as portals to emotion, including human-altered "non-natural nature" such as reservoirs and clearings, and wildfire skies seen as both alarming and beautiful. Occupying an impressive space in Ixelles, the Parisian gallery defines its strategy according to strong individual characters : the artists. They are invited to feel free to use the gallery space as they wish. Based on minimalist and conceptual artists, the programme includes artists whose works, using different media, can be compared beyond styles and beyond their generation, within the gallery.
