Is American guitarist Julian Lage the heir apparent to jazz royals such as John Scofield and Pat Metheny? The New York Times described him as "one of the most talented jazz virtuosos, possessing unflinching technical skill and a seemingly boundless curiosity". On his latest album, Scenes From Above (2026), he performs with a new quartet: bassist Jorge Roeder, drummer Kenny Wollesen and keyboardist John Medeski. With these musical companions in mind, Lage wrote one tune after another, drawing inspiration from Bartók's Hungarian folk songs, Susana Baca and the blues. With this outstanding quartet, Lage will live up to every expectation.
