Mababu - Spirit of the Ancestors

Vrije Universiteit Brussel and De Markten invite teachers, school classes, and the general public to Pamela Tulizo’s exhibition MABABU. Pamela Tulizo is a Congolese photographer based in Goma. In her exhibition MABABU, she explores the power of representation: who is depicted, in what way, and what can images mean to those who rarely see themselves reflected with dignity? New role models Instead of victims, we see women taking action—with presence, beauty, pride, and strength. By presenting them as powerful and inspiring role models, the exhibition invites you to reflect on gender equality, humanistic values, and the courage to stand up against injustice. MABABU is both a tribute and an invitation—to question history, acknowledge forgotten stories, and envision new role models. The exhibition features photographic work, specially designed dresses, and a behind-the-scenes film about the artistic process in Goma.
