Ivorian bassist, singer and composer Manou Gallo has built a unique musical language where West African rhythms meet funk, jazz fusion and raw groove. After arriving in Europe in 1997, she became the bassist of Zap Mama, touring extensively across Europe and the US, before developing her own projects from 2003 onwards. Along the way, she has shared music and stages with figures such as Marcus Miller, Bootsy Collins and Manu Dibango. A bass player’s bass player, Manou approaches the instrument as rhythm, melody and percussion at once. From the freedom of Jaco to the funk heritage of Bootsy and Marcus Miller, these influences meet her own African roots to create something deeply personal: Afro fusion driven by bass and groove. At Sounds, expect a stripped-back and powerful dialogue between bass, voice and drums, with African guitar and flute textures moving through funk, fusion and polyrhythmic grooves.
