The year is 1859. Mary has just endured a 73-day journey from her native New Zealand to the Yorkshire countryside, and more precisely to Nathaniel's manor. The reason? A mysterious letter from perfidious Albion promising to reveal the whole truth about the Māori family she never knew. Unfortunately, the author of the letter has since passed away, and the master of the house dodges every question Mary asks. Yet the estate seems obsessed, if not possessed, by Māori culture. Nathaniel's nostalgia as the former owner of a whaling ship that sailed the turbulent waters of the Pacific seems a rather flimsy explanation for such a fixation... An anti-colonialist pamphlet that fiercely condemns cultural appropriation — and much more besides — wrapped in a meticulously crafted package of Gothic horror. As unsettling as it is enlightening!
