Part of Compassionate Week, we screen Taste of Cherry (1997), Abbas Kiarostami's dreamlike, contemplative film. Middle-aged Mr. Badii, seeking to end his life in a society where suicide is taboo, drives through the hills around Tehran looking for someone willing to bury him after his death — meeting a range of people who each have their own reasons to refuse. A film about grief and loss, but just as much about connection, understanding and compassion — and ultimately about what it means to be human.
