Solemn chords, a spiritual atmosphere: Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s First Sonata for Cello and Piano (1972) opens with a sober and profound mood. But soon, it is swept by waves that grow ever broader and more intense. Swedish composer Anders Hillborg is one of his country’s most renowned composers. Often collaborating with exceptional performers (Renée Fleming, Pekka Kuusisto, Alexandre Kantorow, Martin Fröst…), he takes pleasure in drawing out their full virtuosity, as in *Duo*, a piece he nearly… never got to hear: at the premiere (scheduled for Carnegie Hall), the pianist canceled. On the next attempt, the cellist canceled. On the third attempt (four years had passed), the pianist canceled (!) So we’re counting on Pierre Fontenelle and Ninon Hannecart-Segal to… not cancel and to transport us to vast, virtuosic realms. And speaking of vast and new horizons: this concert will feature the premiere of a brand-new Sonata for Cello and Piano by the Estonian composer Tõnu Kõrvits, widely recognized for his profound and lyrical music.
