Once upon a time – you’ll believe it – there was a king or a princess. No, once upon a time there was a talking piece of wood.’ A talking piece of wood with a heart, set to embark on many adventures – a fairy tale and a coming-of-age story, perhaps the dream of a puppeteer and a string puppet? Or is it the story of the Fairy and a mysterious blue forest, a marvellous tale that explores the links between dreams and a childhood that is growing up and discovering the challenges of growing up, or simply the child who realises he is more than just a puppet but is still, and always will be, a child who wishes to remain a child. Pinocchio is, of course, the story of the most famous string puppet and much more besides: the story of a puppet who becomes a child, but above all it is the dream of a puppeteer and a puppet.
