Screening: Sun Ra Do the Impossible

This screening will take place at the AB Salon, Steenstraat 11, 1000 Brussels. Doors open at 7.30 pm; the screening starts at 8.00 pm. Documentary, directed by Christine Turner, 84 minutes. In English, with English subtitles. Sun Ra was much more than a jazz musician. He was a composer, poet, philosopher, Egyptologist and bandleader. With his Sun Ra Arkestra, he produced over 200 albums and pushed the boundaries of free jazz. His music and ideas brought together elements such as ancient Egypt, interstellar metaphors and scientific reflections into a unique vision of Afrofuturism. Director Christine Turner tells the story of this multifaceted artist through the memories of members and dancers of the Sun Ra Arkestra, interviews with musicologists, and rare film and performance archive footage. The result is a fascinating portrait of a man with an extraordinary imagination and an artistic vision that helped shape the jazz and cultural landscape of the 20th century and beyond.
