On May 22, 1914, Herman Poole Blount arrived on Earth in Birmingham, Alabama - an industrial and segregated city in the rural South of the United States, nicknamed The Magic City. At the age of 32, he moved to Chicago. There, he became Sun Ra, one of the most prolific jazz musicians of the twentieth century, as well as the founder of a singular cosmic philosophy. The Magic City is both a portrait of the artist as a young man and a portrait of a city through time.
