Ernesto Lecuona (1895–1963), a Cuban virtuoso pianist and composer, was praised by George Gershwin and Maurice Ravel during his tours of Europe and the United States. He was one of those great piano heroes who, like Franz Liszt, set the stage alight and thrilled audiences wherever he performed. A dazzling blend of Romanticism and passion, Lecuona’s music offers an opportunity to discover both the rhythms and colours of Cuban dances and the atmosphere of nineteenth-century Vienna. Franz Liszt’s admiration for Wagner is well known. An outstanding virtuoso, Liszt was also a great patron whose dedication and talent helped many musicians, both of his own time and of the past, such as Beethoven, gain recognition and appreciation. Schubert will also take pride of place in this captivating recital!
