Fabrice Murgia returns to the Théâtre National with a production that combines an epic scope with the realism of a deeply immersive narrative. A life spent almost entirely in a state of confinement. Since childhood, Loutfi, aged 44, has gone from one institution to another: sent to a care centre at the age of 2 on the initiative of social services, he was subsequently put through a series of institutions for minors before being sent to prison several times for petty crimes. His meeting with Fabrice Murgia sparked the idea of telling his story, a necessary step towards finally managing to deal with life ‘on the outside’. Designed for an intimate stage setting, in close proximity to the audience, Je suis un voleur unfolds the episodes of Loutfi’s past as a series of scenes brought to life by the performers. This unique, almost novelistic journey sheds light on a whole facet of life in detention centres, a violent, dead-end world that still deserves our attention today.
