
Brazilian artist Maria Thereza Alves (b. 1961, São Paulo) is a mixed-media installation artist, video artist, activist, and writer. Based between Naples and Berlin, Alves centers her practice on research-based investigations into local histories and environmental realities through collaborative engagement with communities, refusing Western binaries between nature/culture and art/politics. Her work spans watercolor, mixed-media sculpture, handblown glass installation, and print, addressing colonialism, slavery, migration, and global commerce. She has participated in Documenta 13, Manifesta 12, and Biennale of Sydney.
