Michel Frère
About this event
Michel Frère (1961-1999) painted for fifteen years, from the mid-1980s until his death at 38. He began in the figuration of his decade and moved towards the material of paint itself, layering oil into an animated sedimentation that held seduction and abjection together, often showing the work behind glass so the viewer's own reflection entered it. Curated by Anne Pontégnie, this exhibition gathers emblematic large-scale paintings, a sculpture, smaller works and archival material from his studio - a first attempt at reading that work anew, from informal art to queer culture.
