For the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis’ birth, Stéphane Mercier and Vincent Mardens take on an ambitious challenge: to explore Miles’ extraordinary musical journey, from his earliest recordings with Charlie Parker through the different periods and musicians that shaped his career. Stéphane Mercier plays the C-melody saxophone, while Vincent Mardens plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones. Together, they revisit Miles’ music from their own perspective, supported by a dream rhythm section. Across two sets, Miles Ahead travels from bebop to hard bop, through the music associated with Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, with a nod to the remarkable collaborations with Gil Evans, before moving towards jazz-rock and fusion. Two saxophonists, a great rhythm section and almost half a century of music to explore in just two sets — something of a Mission Impossible!
