Pierre Alechinsky (b. 1927, Brussels) is a legendary Belgian artist and co-founder of the CoBrA movement. His practice spans tachisme, abstract expressionism, and lyrical abstraction, melding medieval illustrations, folk art, and comic-book layouts. After traveling to Japan in 1955, he incorporated Japanese calligraphy techniques into his work. His mystical, symbol-laden paintings read as mysterious codices. Works are held in Tate London, MoMA New York, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium.
