About this event
悲情城市 A City of Sadness, 侯孝賢 Hou Hsiao-hsien (1989). Fiction, 158 min. Preceded by a conversation between Michael Lin and P. M. S. Collective (TBC), and followed by a short Q&A. This film marks the first installment of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Taiwan trilogy. It depicts the tragic fate of the Lin family, whose lives are disrupted by tensions between local Taiwanese people and Chinese immigrants during the transition from Japanese colonial rule to the KMT(Chinese Nationalist Party) government. The film offers a groundbreaking portrayal of the previously taboo 228 Incident, while also highlighting the political trauma experienced by ordinary citizens. Hou Hsiao-hsien is a leading figure in world cinema and in the Taiwan New Cinema movement. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1989 for his film A City of Sadness, and the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 for The Assassin.
